In the autumn season, MBTA Commuter rail provide $10 Weekend Ticket. This ticket is good for travel across all zones during two days. It's so reasonable. Yesterday, I went to Fitchberg, located 45 miles west-northwest of Boston using this ticket. It takes 90 min from Boston to Fitchburg by train, and in weekend the train arrives only every 2 hours.
In Massachusetts Commonwealth, the regional revitalzation project named "Gateway Cities" is ongoing. "Gateway Cities" are defined as midsize urban centers, where once froulished as home to industry, and retain many assets with potential, but now face social and economic challenges. Now, 26 cities are registered as Gateway Cities. https://massinc.org/our-work/policy-center/gateway-cities/about-the-gateway-cities/
Actually, the cities I visited until now (Lawrence, Lynn, Chelsea) and Fitchbury were all "Gateway Cities". So I went all the way to Fitchbury for the research of the project.
Fitchburg was a 19th-century industrial center. Originally operated by water power, large mills produced machines, tools, clothing, paper, and firearms. The population was abour 40,000 (as of 2010) . The racial makeup of the city was 78.2% White, 5.1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.6% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 21.6% of the population.
